LEARN WORLD CLASS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU IN A SAFE AND RELAXED ENVIRONMENT

BJJ was made globally famous back in 1993 with the introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and is now considered the most effective hand to hand martial art system and is practiced by millions around the world including UK and International Police as well as British Armed Services who now use BJJ to train in Self-Defence.

Whatever the reason for starting your journey at ICON Jiu Jitsu; wether to compete, perfect an art, get fit or learn self defence you will be supported by instructors and teammates with decades of experience and be part of a global Jiu-Jitsu family.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has it’s martial art roots in Japan, evolved in Brazil and now practiced all over the world. Jiu Jitsu teaches you to use balance, leverage and timing to take down, gain a position of control and neutralise an opponent.

Once learned properly and practiced these principles and techniques will allow you control and force a submission on someone bigger and athletically stronger with a huge variety of chokes and joint locks. The way we drill and spar enable everyone to train and develop together in safety.

ICON Jiu Jitsu Team formed in 2010 by Professor Ze Marcello who been teaching in the UK since 2002 after a professional competition career, winning tournaments across the world. A 6th Degree Black Belt under Sergio “Bolao” Souza, Ze is one of the highest ranked practitioners teaching in the UK.

Our Academy in Peterborough is headed up by Black Belt Delroy McDowell making it is the perfect place to begin your Jiu Jitsu journey.

Icon Peterborough Safeguarding Policy

Purpose and Aims of our policy statement

This policy document communicates key elements and the fundamental principles that drive Icon Peterborough’s commitment to safeguarding.

Safeguarding is how we describe the wide range of tools, people and actions that are in place to ensure that children and vulnerable adults who may need support and care are not left isolated and unnoticed. And to ensure that they are protected from risk of abuse and harm.

The purpose of this policy is to  support the protecting of people. Particularly children and  vulnerable and at-risk adults from any harm that they could be exposed to when visiting Icon Peterborough or when in contact with its staff, volunteers and other individuals. This includes harm that could arise from:

  • The conduct of staff, volunteers or other personnel associated with Icon Peterborough.

  • The organisation and implementation of Icon Peterborough activities and programmes.

This policy determines the commitments made by Icon Peterborough and informs all members of staff and associated personnel of their responsibilities regarding safeguarding.

What is Safeguarding

Child safeguarding legislation is covered by three acts in England:

  • Children Act 1989

  • Children Act 2004

  • Children and Social Work Act 2017

These together provide the framework for child protection and safeguarding.

In England, safeguarding means protecting health, wellbeing and human rights. Enabling people to live free from harm, abuse and neglect.

At Icon Peterborough we understand it to mean protecting people, especially children and vulnerable adults from harm that could arise from contact with Icon Peterborough staff or activities.

Prevention and Reporting

It is the duty of Staff, volunteers and associated personnel to prevent any suspected physical, emotional and sexual abuse of children and at-risk adults. We will respond to concerns about the well-being of children and at-risk adults and report any abuse disclosed, discovered or suspected. Icon Peterborough will fully support and co-operate with any investigation in to any suspected abuse connected with Icon Peterborough.

Safer recruitment and supervision of personnel

Icon Peterborough will exercise proper care when selecting and appointing individuals who are to be working with children and at-risk adults.

Respecting children and vulnerable adults

Icon Peterborough has adopted a code of behaviour for all personnel and staff who are in contact with children and vulnerable adults so that they can be confident that they will always be shown the respect that they are due.

Community safety

Icon Peterborough is dedicated to the eradication of bullying of children and at-risk adults. Icon Peterborough will always seek to ensure that any behaviour that may pose a risk to children, young people and vulnerable adults is managed appropriately.

Safeguarding Procedures

Icon Peterborough staff and volunteers will have access to a copy of the safeguarding policy and procedures and will be encouraged to support its implementation at all times whether on site or off site, as well as when on duty during working hours or off duty.

Icon Peterborough’s safeguarding policy will be continuously monitored and reviewed annually.

The safeguarding policy will be published on Icon Peterborough’s website and a copy will be available upon request.

Every member of Icon Peterborough management, staff and volunteers will be required to have a DBS check undertaken without exception.

Actions and responses to concerns

Everyone associated with or even just visiting Icon Peterborough has their own role to play in ensuring the safeguarding of all children and vulnerable adults, including those with protected characteristics as defined in the Equality Act 2010, such as age, disability, sex and sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage, race, belief or religion, pregnancy and maternity.

What to do if you have concerns of any risk of harm, neglect or abuse

Abuse can be physical, emotional, sexual and neglect.

Abuse is when someone causes harm or distress. It can take many forms. Ranging from disrespect to causing someone mental or bodily harm and physical pain.

Abuse can occur within any home, school, care home, hospital, sports club or any public space.

Often the people who commit abuse are taking advantage of a special relationship.

If you have any concerns or suspect any abuse you should:

  • Always take the person seriously and listen carefully to everything you are being told.

  • Record what you have seen or what you have been told.

  • Tell your manager or safeguarding lead.

If someone is in immediate danger you must contact the police by calling 999.

Never dismiss your concerns. Seek advice from management if your have a concern.

Do not act alone.

Do not investigate allegations or confront any adult about whose behaviour you have concerns.

Do not take responsibility for whether or not any abuse is actually taking place.

Do not take sole responsibility for what has been shared or for any concerns you have.

Always follow Icon Peterborough’s policy and procedures for responding to concerns.

DO
Listen, clarify and record.
Stay calm, offer and give support.
Explain what happens next.
Take action.

Don’t

Allegations against staff

Local authorities have a Designated Officer or a team of Officers who are involved in the management and oversight of allegations against people who work with children. This role was previously known as LADO (Local Authority Designated Officer). This person will be a qualified social worker and can provide advice and guidance to employers and organisations. Any allegation should reported immediately to a senior manager within the organisation (Working Together to Safeguard Children, 2023).
